Question: I’m not a sax player, but I want to learn, so I’m trying to find something suitable for me. I’ve played the clarinet in the past, but that was some time ago, but I’m interested in soprano saxophone. Is a curved neck easier to play than the straight variety? And should I look for a single piece or one that has detachable necks to accommodate curved or straight necks?

Music teachers are not the most wealthy people on the planet. Its unfortunate, but true that the person who teaches violin probably earns less than the person who delivers your mail or collects your garbage.
Why would that be? ’m sure that at least in part music teachers choose the career because of the satisfaction and enjoyment of it. Music teachers always end up not earning as much as other professionals because they are very generous when it comes to giving refunds or crediting lessons, and they don’t want to overstretch the amount of time they can realistically teach.
This article doesn’t intend to argue about the dollar amounts that teachers should be paid, but hopefully it can provide a few alternatives that might help them to earn a little more.
Lets start by thinking about a few simple things that you could do as a private music teacher to earn more dollars:
Look at packaging your lessons in a different way. Why not charge on a months basis rather than at each lesson? Can you offer an increased rate for different services? What about offering a group theory lesson as well as their private time?
Can you offer educational materials and music theory books in addition to their tuition? You can purchase reprint rights to a music theory book (or write it yourself) and print it off for the students at an extra charge. You can also purchase books in bulk from the internet and charge the students for it. I’m sure that for saving the inconvenience of going to the store the parents will not mind spending a few more dollars with you.
Is it possible for you to start a home based business? Parents and students in your music studio will be very interested in a little multi-level marketing type business. These are easy to start with very little money and can be lots of fun. There are many businesses to choose from including vitamins, educational materials and greeting cards. All these types of services are interesting to parents in your music school – and if they know they can get their vitamins from you why wouldn’t they? You don’t have to sign up other distributors if you don’t want to – you can simply sell the products or services of the business to your exisiting clients.
Retaining your students is one of the most important factors for music teachers. To keep your income high it is necessary to fill every spot in your teaching timetable. How do you do that? Easy. Make your music lessons FUN! If you make your lessons fun then your students will want to come, and they’ll never want to stop! It isn’t that hard to start wearing a smile, calling activities “games” and adding little five minute game time segments at the end of every lesson.
I hope that these ideas give you some insights and help to earn a few more dollars as a private music teacher.
Question: Alto Saxophone to be specific; how can you execute a clear and beautiful tone from the saxophone? A beginner player will have a somewhat “fuzzy” tone, while a professional gives off a nice and clean tone. Does it have something to do with embrochure, or maybe letting ALL the air you use go nowhere but into the instrument? Thanks in advance.
Question: I really love soprano sax and planning to buy one soon. However, I can’t find a music school that teaches soprano sax. They teaches the alto one. If I can play an alto sax, does it mean I can easily play a soprano one too? How different is playing a soprano saxophone with playing an alto saxophone?
